Psychologist Gordon Allport was the first to give personality some scientific recognition by identifying what he termed "central and cardinal characteristics." These are the traits that make up a person's distinctive character. He classified Webster's Dictionary, which contained over 18,000 words. Later research reduced these characteristics to the Big Five personality dimensions used by psychologists.

Another method of understanding personality is through the notion of moderation. Moderation is a gradual change that occurs when predictors and hypothesized mediators are measured simultaneously. This type of test is ideal for assessing trait processes, but it does not take into account the effects of situations.

If you are open and agreeable, your tendency to cooperate and be trustworthy could enhance the effectiveness of the group. These traits will also help you be more aware of other people's requirements and wants.

Some people are born with certain temperaments, in addition to their personality characteristics. These are automatic, fundamental responses to danger and reward that are a reflection of associative-learning.  Recommended Studying  include four types of behavior: harm avoidance (avoidance of harm), reward dependence (dependence on rewards), novelty-seeking (seeking novelty) and persistence. These are similar to ancient notions of melancholic, sanguine, and phlegmatic temperaments, even though they are described by dimensions rather than distance categories. These types of personalities are more likely to be happy and successful than those without them, but it is not an absolute assurance.
